设计是人类为了实现某种特定的目的而进行的有计划的一系列的创造性的人造物活动。工业设计是在人类社会文明高度发展过程中，伴随着大工业生产的技术、艺术、和经济相结合的产物。工业设计的出发点和归宿是以促进人的全面发展为导向，不断的满足人们日益增长的物质的和精神的需要。工业设计与人类社会息息相关。
工业革命以来，不顾地球生态环境的“高消耗、高投入、高污染、少数人高消费”的生产方式与消费方式异军突起。人类这种不计后果的生活方式直接导致：生态和环境急剧恶化，温室气体的大量排放，全球增暖趋势明显，臭氧层空洞扩大，土地退化沙化和物种灭绝的速度加剧，发达国家与不发达国家间的贫富差距加深。人们认识到不能孤立地讨论经济社会的发展，经济社会的发展要与环境保护相协调。
我党的十六届四中全会明确提出，中国共产党作为执政党，要“坚持最广泛最充分地调动一切积极因素，不断提高构建社会主义和谐社会的能力”。这是我党在去年十六届三中全会适时提出的坚持以人为本、树立全面协调可持续发展的科学发展观的基础上，第一次把构建社会主义和谐社会作为我们党的执政目标，把和谐社会建设放到同经济建设、政治建设、文化建设并列的突出位置。
为了处理、调整、协调人类与环境、与地球的关系，解决地球危机，人们正在努力寻求管理环境资源和使人类发展持久的新方法。这种思想观念已经渗透到了人类社会的各个领域中。
社会模式设计体现了人们永续发展的思想。社会模式设计体现了设计学和社会学交叉融合，是在社会学及社会协同学相关理论的指导下产生的一种新的设计模式。艺术设计伴随着人类社会的产生而出现，经过漫长的发展演变，现代设计呈现出多元化的状态。社会模式设计在博采众家之长的基础上，更注重和社会的协调性，包括与环境的协调以及与人的协调；社会模式设计以满足人类和社会的“真实的需求”为目标，以促进社会协同发展。
Design is a series of creative artificial things which mankind use to realize a certain purpose. Industry design is produced in high development of human social civilization process, accompanying with the technique, art and economy combined together. The point of departure and end of the industry design is to promote the person to develop completely . Continuously contented people increase increasingly material with the demand of the spirit. People know that they can't stand alone a ground of discussions the economy is social of development, the social development in economy must moderate with environmental protection mutually.
In order to handle, adjust, moderate the relationship of mankind environment and Earth, solving the Earth crisis, people are working hard looking for the way to manage the environment resources and make human development hold out for long time. This kind of thought has pervaded in each realm in human society.
